Scary Movie V Movie Review

If you’re a fan of some of the older installments of the Scary Movie franchise, we’re sure that you’ll be no stranger to the slapstick comedy angle that these cult favorite movies often seem to take.

Scary Movie V Movie Review

In this fifth installment of the ever popular movie franchise, we see stars such as Lindsay Lohan and Charlie Sheen take center stage.

Sure, while it might not necessarily be the most well made (or even the most popular, for that matter) movie out of the entire franchise, one place that we simply have to give Scary Movie V credit for is its timing.

At the time of its creation, Scary Movie V was able to take advantage of the mass rollout of some of the most popular movies of the time – and even now to this very day.

In Scary Movie V, we see parody’s of some of the bestselling movies including Fifty Shades of Grey and Evil Dead, to name a few. The only problem?

Despite being able to deliver parodies of some classic movies, most of the writing, comedic timings and acting is just unable to translate on the screen to the audience. In other words, none of the jokes land.

Directed by Malcolm D.Lee and co-written by David Zucker (think The Naked Gun and Airplane), we’d expect to see the comedic duo work their magic in the same fashion on Scary Movie 5.

The film itself, when it was released back in 2013, wasn’t screened by the press prior to the theatrical release.

This was a huge flaw in the marketing plan, as the movie, which we’re sure the directors wanted to be met with laughter – was met with quite the opposite.

If you haven’t gotten round to seeing this movie but you’ve happened to see the trailer, then you’ve already seen one of the most notable moments of this movie.

We’re sure you know which scene we’re talking about, but if you don’t, there’s one scene where Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan playfully poke fun at each other’s past personas, all while poking fun at the Paranormal Activity series.

A promising start it would seem, but the rest of the movie just seems to take a downward spiral from there on out.

One of the biggest mistakes that his movie makes is the amount of time it spends on movies that just aren’t big enough for the airtime.

One great example of this is how much time the directors dedicate to the sleeper hit movie Mama, which stars Jessica Chastain.

Over the years, this movie has gone on to become a cult classic in its own right, but at the time of its release, Mama was met with mixed reactions amongst both critics and the public.

That being said, the amount of time both directors dedicate to parodying this movie feels out of place, even while watching it today.

Apart from that, there isn’t too much else to say about this movie other than it feels rushed, jumbled and mis-matched together.

Some of the movies that Scary V attempts to parody (and often fails to do so successfully) include movies such as Inception, Planet of the Apes, Cabin in the Woods and even Black Swan.

There’s also a narrator throughout the movie that is supposed to be a Morgan Freeman “sound-alike” used to narrate parts of the movie where airtime needs to be filled.

Along with all of this, other stars such as Ashley Tisdale and Simon Rex do their best to land jokes, all while having to switch between parodies of various films that seem to be totally mashed together.

And, even though both actors are very talented and able to deliver their lines comedically well, the majority of the rest of the cast are only present for small cameos – including the following: Snoop Dogg, Katt Williams, Terry Crews, Heather Locklear and Molly Shannon, to name a few.

We also see the director Lee try to speed up the movie in places for comedic effect, which does work.

Needless to say, one of the only genuinely parts of this movie is seen while the credits are rolling. The audience is treated to a series of bloopers that have been crafted into a montage next to the rolling credits.

From forgotten lines to props with a mind of their own – it seems, at least, the cast had a good time making Scary Movie V! If you’re on the lookout for an easy movie to watch on a Sunday or at the end of a long day, this movie could be fun.

But, if you’re a scary movie connoisseur, maybe opt for something else.
