The History Of Cinemark Theatres

How Cinemark Came & Acquired

 Cinemark made its first impressions on the United States of America back in 1984 by a man named Lee Roy Mitchell. In the beginning, you would only find these cinemas in a handful of states such as Texas, California, and Utah. 

However, it didn’t take long before the chain spread like wildfire throughout the USA. And no more than 10 years later, there was a Cinemark in pretty much every single state. This was a massive achievement for what started as a small family-run business. 

By 2006, the chain had acquired an additional 80 new cinemas from Century Theatres. These were purchased through both stocks and cash.

Moving forward another three years and the company actually tried to save Muvico from bankruptcy by purchasing a further four theaters from Muvico Theatres. 

Move forward three more years again, and this exponential acquisition didn’t show any signs of stopping, when in 2012 Cinemark began to purchase Rave theatres.

This was a massive step forward for the chain as they started to acquire IMAX screens which are of much higher quality. However, the chain did lose some of these screens during some cost-cutting. A few other theatres were also sold to other companies such as Carmike Cinemas. 

In the following two years, Cinemark was once again set to expand and renovate it’s cinemas. Many of their older cinemas were being treated to upgraded sound systems and new and upgraded XD large screens.

This meant that they would be able to show both standard 2D movies as well as Real-D 3D movies too. 

Cinemark Controversy’s

In 1997 Cinemark became the head of a fair amount of controversy. The company was charged by the Department of Justice for going against the Americans with Disabilities Act.

This was because the design of the seating arrangement forced all wheelchair users to sit at the very front of the theatre.

Eventually, the company agreed to renovate its seating plans so that guests in wheelchairs had more of a choice of where they would sit. 

Political Controversy

In 2008, the company faced a heavy amount of backlash as it was leaked that the CEO of the company, Alan Stock, had donated a large sum to the Proposition 8 movement. This movement tried to outlaw same-sex marriage in California. 

This led to many movie-watchers boycotting the company and began many counter-campaigns from Cinemark rivals. Things did not settle down until the movement was denounced. 

Cinemark Terror

During 2012, a Cinemark in Aurora, Colorado became the setting for a fatal terror attack. On this tragic day, a singular gunman opened fire inside the theater and 12 victims were pronounced dead and another 70 were confirmed to have been injured. 

In 2014, the theater chains had to withdraw all screenings of ‘The Interview’ after there had been several terrorist threats that any theatre showing the film would be bombed. 

Movie-Going Innovations From Cinemark Theatres

• Stadium Seating – Did you know that Cinemark is one of the very first chains to ever employ stadium-type seating? This has become a really helpful and important part of cinema seating. Of course, as mentioned above, their innovation hit a little off-mark when it first began. This is because there were no measures put in place for disabled customers to be able to sit anywhere else other than the very front row. This was, however, later revised and made more wheel-chair user-friendly. 

• Unique Screen Design –  The unique screen design called XD is only used in Cinemark cinemas. And pretty much every screen in the Cinemark chain uses this large-screen concept. 

Cost For Cinemark Movie Theater Tickets

Considering that Cinemark is possibly one of the biggest theatre chains in pretty much the entire world, their tickets are surprisingly good for money. You’ll tend to find that most of their ticket prices beat those of other movie chains such as AMC. 

Does that mean that Cinemark is selling lower quality to be able to afford these prices? Nope. Cinemark shows great movies at high picture quality with a decent sound system, and the popcorn is pretty tasty too. 

They also hold charity events, have loyalty programs in place, and so much more. 

Ticket Discounts & Special Offers 

While Cinemark ticket prices are still pretty cheap, we all love a good discount, don’t we? There’s nothing as satisfying as getting that service just a little bit cheaper. Well, Cinemark also offers a variety of discounts and special offers so you can save those pennies.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, there’s nothing that quite compares to going to the cinema. Sure you can watch a film at home but you just can’t recreate that same atmosphere. 

There’s no huuuuge screen in your living room (if there is, I’m jealous) you don’t have quite the same sound quality, and you certainly can’t recreate that delicious buttery popcorn at home.

The typical price for an AMC black ticket is around $10, they’re available at Amazon, Costco, Sam’s Club and AMC of course.

Tickets on Amazon are usually sold by third-party vendors and Costco sells them in 2-packs with a $20 AMC gift card for $40.

AMC Yellow Ticket Price

The typical price for an AMC yellow ticket is around $9 and they’re available at Amazon, Costco, Sam’s Club and AMC. As long as you don’t live in the three excluded states, you can get decent savings on movies! 

How To Use AMC Black Tickets

Using a yellow or black ticket couldn’t be easier. You can easily redeem them either online or in the theater.

Just note, if you are going to be redeeming the ticket online or from the app, you’ll have to pay a convenience fee, which can be quite annoying.

Regal Cinemas, acquired by British theater chain Cineworld in 2017, is the second largest cinema chain in the world.

Most theaters will make a low proportion of their total profit from ticket sales, so that means they have to make up for it in some way.

A matinee is a performance in a theater or a showing of a movie that takes place in the daytime. Now daytime is a little bit subjective.

You could open your eyes from a long night’s sleep and argue it’s daytime. You could be up for several hours and sit down for lunch and say that it’s daytime.

You may even argue that any time before dark is daytime. So when exactly do these matinee shows take place? That’s what we will discuss in this article.

Throughout this article, we’ll take a look at movie theatre matinee times for several different theaters, as well as discuss the history of the matinee and much more.

So without further ado, let’s jump straight into it.

Matinee Explained

So what are movie matinee times? Why are they in place? What’s their purpose?

Essentially, movie matinee times are put in place in movie theaters to encourage visitors to come to the movie theatre more regularly.

Particularly, throughout off-peak times. You’ll usually notice that these times are during what you would expect to be the quietest time for the theaters.

They tend to be between 9 am-12 pm or 3.30 pm – 6 pm. So the times when people are usually at work or school.

Or the times when people are returning from work and school.

Offering movies with matinee showings, that are usually much cheaper than peak movie times, are usually done with the intention of increasing their customer base and thus their revenues.

People aren’t visiting much at a particular time, and so deals and promotions for those times are introduced to entice you in.

Matinee times are consistently used by many different cinema chains throughout the US.

The advantage of this is that it allows movie lovers who may not regularly be able to afford to go, to be able to see their favorite movies.

The disadvantage is that there isn’t a standardized time throughout the chains and so these ‘discount’ times will vary from theater to theater.

Matinee Movie History

So where did matinee movies originate from? The French, we believe. Matinee has french origins.

The French word for Matin translates to morning while Matinee translates to morning performance.

As is often the case with languages, this word has then been adopted into the English language with a new transformed, although fairly similar, meaning.

Now, in the USA, if you were to hear this word you’d probably automatically think about an afternoon or daytime performance at either the cinema, theater, or broadway.

However, back in the 1930s -1960s in France, it always referred to their ultimate pastime – the Opera.

You know how when you go to a concert there is usually a warm-up act that comes on first to stir up the crowd and gets you stimulated and hyped for the main event?

Well, the exact same thing would happen at the Opera. Before the Opera would begin, they would show movies to liven up the crowd.

These movies would often star devilishly handsome men which is where the term matinee idol comes from.

So these pre-Opera movies are where the term for matinee movies comes from.

So next time you go to a matinee showing, impress your friends with your new-found knowledge.

Surprisingly though, matinee times are not really used universally around the world.

It’s really only the United States and Canada that refers to these discounted movie times as matinee movie times.

Most other countries just refer to them as discounted times such as early-bird tickets or morning tickets.

Though I suppose the intention, to draw in customers at off-peak times, remains the same.

When Are Matinee Times?

As is highlighted in the table above, most matinee movie times are between early morning and mid-afternoon.

This can vary slightly depending on the movie theater, some start their matinee times much earlier while others will extend them further into the early evening.

Above, I detailed some of the more popular theater chains and when their matinee times tend to be, but of course, I cannot detail every theater.

There are thousands upon thousands of movie theaters across the United States, and it simply wouldn’t be possible to document all of their matinee times.

If you need to find the times for a particular movie theater, it’s not difficult to find this information.

You can usually check online and most discount options will be highlighted on the website, or alternatively, you can contact the theater and ask for their matinee times.

Which Tickets Are Discounted For Matinee?

Typically, you’ll find that it is only general admission tickets or adult tickets that receive any discount during the cinema’s matinee hours.

This is because child tickets, senior tickets, and student and military tickets are already discounted, and movie theaters already make more money off concessions than they do their tickets.

Essentially, only these tickets are discounted because they are the only tickets the theater can afford to discount.

Again, this can sometimes change from theater to theater so you are always best checking the policy of the theater you are attending to ensure that the tickets will be at your expected budget.

IMAX theatres are pretty much exactly like your standard movie theatre except a whole lot bigger! In fact, some IMAX cinemas even have dome screens that surround you entirely!

How cool is that! And not only is the screen bigger but the picture quality is better. However, there are really only two correct ones: in bed and at the movie theater.

Honestly, bed is one of the coziest and most comfortable places in life – which is probably why humans spend a third of their life asleep.

At the same time, the movie theater is the place to be in those moments where you’re awake.

There is simply no better hobby than enjoying your favorite movies on an enormous screen with crisp, loud surround sound speakers offering up the audio.

But what if you could combine the two states? What if you could have a movie theater with a bed in it? Well, you can!

All across America, a whole series of movie theaters with beds have popped up, so you can lie down in comfort while you watch your movie.

These are going to be the focus of our list today.

However, these theaters are still not quite everywhere, so to account for the people who can’t travel to them, we’ll count movie theaters with recliners too.

After all, it’s mostly the same thing – you get to kick back and relax while taking in the latest blockbuster.

Emagine

If you haven’t been to an Emagine movie theater, then you’re undoubtedly missing out. Why?

They have some of the most luxurious seating in the cinema world, with seats that are so comfortable you might run the risk of falling asleep and missing your movies!

When you go to an Emagine, you’ve got a choice of different seats to have.

The unquestionable best are their “power recliners”, which are exactly as good as they sound.

Their power recliner seats are like little thrones, really! For one thing, they’re very large, giving you plenty of room to move around in and get lost in.

These are seats that you can properly sink into if you want to, immersing yourself in their soft cushion.

Secondly, the chairs are totally electric, allowing you to move them around and recline your seat back to exactly the angle that you are most comfortable sitting at.

Emagine movie theaters also offer some leather rocking chairs, which are also a treat to sit in, if not quite a recliner.

You may not think of rocking chairs when you picture movie theater seating, and you might assume that rocking up and down might make the enormous screen seem a bit trippy and confusing, but you’d be surprised!

A rocking chair can give you exactly the right gentle rhythm of movement to enjoy your movie even more.

You won’t be able to get the power recliners at all Emagine movie theaters, unfortunately, but changes are underway to get them rolled out (or should that be reclined?) at many more of their theaters soon.

Similarly, some of their theaters offer heated seating, which makes the movie-watching experience even more relaxing.

These aren’t available at all locations, though, but should become more available over time.

Emagine customers are through the roof with happiness over their seating arrangements, and it’s understandable to see why.

Customers have enthused online about how comfortable the power recliners are, as well as the fact that you can have food delivered to your seat during the movie.

What’s better than lying back with a movie? Lying back and eating with a movie! Better yet, customers are impressed with the pricing too.

You don’t have to pay royalty prices in order to sit on a throne.

Cinépolis Luxury

As you can tell from the name of this branch of the enormously successful movie theater chain Cinépolis, you’re going to get enormous comfort.

Seriously, Cinépolis Luxury takes the already great standard theaters that Cinépolis offers and makes it even better.

How so? Well, they offer a movie watching environment that’s difficult to beat.

Customers can enjoy a neat, elegant movie theater room, with plenty of fully-reclining leather seats.

These seats are especially big, meaning that you can really lose yourself in their comforting goodness, and the reclining options allow you to adjust the bag to fit your comfort tastes just right.

Better yet, the seats are presented in intimate pairs, with a sort-of bedside table separating each pair from the next.

This allows you to sit with your significant other all to yourselves, allowing you to enjoy the movie as if you’re alone with each other.

Alternatively, you can have your family neatly divided into little pairs, each feeling safe and secure in the theater.

On top of that, each seat has waiter service, meaning that you can get plenty of meals delivered to you while you enjoy the movie watching experience.

These meals come from the gourmet kitchen that Cinépolis Luxury has onsite, cooking up tasty treats for your mouth to water over.

There’s recliner chairs, and then there’s beds. This is the latter.

iPic movie theaters are famous for being the only theaters in the United States to have beds permanently installed in a few of their locations, making them one of the very best movie theaters in the world by default.

If you thought it was nice getting to recline the back of your seat back, you’ll be on cloud nine when you see the luxurious beds that are available at some iPic movie theaters.

They have plush yellow cushions for you to lie back on, with a raised back and a built-in pillow, allowing you to lie back with your feet up like you’re some kind of Roman emperor.

Better yet, there’s a fixed table in the middle, meaning that you can have your food and drink right in front of you at arm’s length.

On top of that, each bed is neatly designed so that it fits two people.

So, if you’re going to the movie theater with your partner, you can both enjoy lying down next to each other as you watch the movie.

The beds are at the very front of the movie theater, so you don’t have to be interrupted by any people in seats getting up repeatedly.

Customers love these beds – and we can’t blame them!

Most customers praise the seating as being super comfy, as well as loving the waiter service that brings you food during the movie, allowing you to eat and watch at your own leisure and pleasure.

Everyone knows AMC, it’s one of the biggest movie theater chains in the entire United States.

Naturally, they’ve had to offer an exceptional service to its many customers in order to get this reputation.

As you can guess, their seating is one of the factors that has helped them rocket to the top spots of moviegoing experiences in America.

How so? Well, they’ve got supremely luxurious reclining seating. Seats are plush and comfortable, with red cushioning and firm armrests.

Like with Cinépolis Luxury, the seats are put into pairs, allowing you to sit more privately with your moviegoing partner, separated from all the other patrons.

Admittedly, AMC doesn’t have bed seats yet, but their reclining seats are brilliant on their own. On top of that, each seat has a raised table in front of it.

This is for the food – oh the food!

Many AMC movie theaters have been adapted to offer a full movie dining experience, with a whole range of food being brought to you as you watch your favorite movie play out on the enormous screen in front.

Plenty of AMC movie theater locations offer up gourmet menus for you to indulge in, with more locations hopefully on the way.

In addition to that gourmet quality, many of these movie-food experience theaters also have a bar that is fully licensed.

You may even opt for a nice cold drink to wash it down with too. After all, you’re out for the day and this is a treat, right?

Well, a treat it certainly should be, you may not realize it but as your mindlessly munching away and slurping up that soda as you are transported to a new and exciting world, you’re actually consuming tons of calories. 

In fact, there can be as much as a whopping whole day’s calories in a large tub of popcorn.

Now, I was never under the impression that snacking at popcorn at the cinema was the epitome of health, but I certainly didn’t think that I was picking away at my whole day’s calorie allowance as well as a whole lot of sodium and saturated fats. 

How Many Calories Are There?

According to research, your favorite movie snack can range from as little as 400 calories up to a huge 1,200 calories. You could also be consuming anywhere between one to three whole days’ worth of saturated fat and as much as 1,500 milligrams of sodium. 

If you decide to add some candy to the mix, you could be looking at adding another 300 to over 1000 calories. Wash it down with a sugarific drink and that’s another 150-500 calories too. 

So while you’re busy watching the latest anticipated movie, you could accidentally consume upwards of 2000 calories without even realizing it. And then also go out for tea afterward. Ouch. 

Popcorn Profiles

The popcorn research didn’t stop there though, samples of popcorn and their tasty toppings from three of the most popular movie theatres were sent to a lab for nutritional analysis, and I have a feeling you’re not going to love the results that they found. 

Regals

Regals popcorn may be bite-size but there’s nothing small about the calorie content. If you’re looking to cut down your calories then you may want to avoid the popular movie theatre snack. 

According to Regals, a medium popcorn will set you back just over 700 calories while a large teeters close to 1000. However, the results in the lab showed something a little different.

In fact, both sizes contained around 20 cups of popcorn and individually came to around 1200 calories each. Not only this but they contained 60g of saturated fat. 

If that doesn’t sound too bad to you, let me put it into perspective. That amount of calories could get you two personal pan pepperoni pizzas from Pizza hut, and you’d still need to add an additional two days’ worth of saturated fat to the equation. 

AMC

This company isn’t much better either. Similar to Regals, AMC chooses to pop their popcorn in coconut oil. This isn’t great considering coconut oil contains approximately 90% saturated fat. 

A large popcorn tub from AMC will set you back 1,030 calories and contains 57 grams of saturated fat. 

Cinemark

If you’re looking to cut back your calories, and you can’t curb that popcorn craving, then you’ll want to watch your favorite films at Cinemark.

This movie theatre is the only one to pop their popcorn in non-hydrogenated canola oil, which results in a much smaller saturated fat content. 

While this is the ‘healthiest’ of the three, you can still expect to say goodbye to the majority of your day’s calories. A small popcorn tub isn’t too bad at 420 calories, but the large bucket is still going to cost you just over 900 calories.

However, the saturated fat content is significantly better, with a small containing as little as 2g of saturated fat and a large containing just 5g. 

Don’t Forget The Butter

If you’re not a fan of bland and plain popcorn and let’s face it who is? Then you’re going to need to add another 120-130 calories to the mix and upwards on 9g of saturated fat per tablespoon to douse the stuff in butter. 

Salty Stuff

Even if you’re good enough to say no to buttering up your popcorn, there’s still the salt content to deal with. Most popcorn is seasoned with quite a lot of salt.

For your smallest popcorn sizes, you may be looking at around 210 milligrams of sodium but upgrade to a large and you’re looking at an absolute monstrous 1,500 milligrams of sodium. 

Combo Catastrophes

As most movie fanatics are probably well aware, you can often be tempted to purchase a special offer combo when you take a trip to the movie theatre. But while this may help you save some extra cash, save your calorie intake it will not. 

If you settle in with a combo at Regal, you’ll have a medium-sized popcorn in one hand, and a medium soda to slurp down in the other.

And while that may not seem like all that much, in your hands you hold over 1,600 calories. Now that’s a lot of calories to consume before the credits role. 

Again, let me put that into perspective for you. To consume that many calories you’d need to scramble six large eggs and load them with cheddar cheese, add four strips of bacon, and finish off with an additional four sausages. 

Your soda choices can range from around 16 ounces – 44 ounces depending on the theatre and so that can be anywhere between 150 – 500 liquid calories to add to the mix. Regal’s largest soda also has as much as 33 heaped teaspoons of sugar. 

And if you like to also treat yourself to some candy, then you can be making an already calorific snack meet new and unheard-of heights.

A 3.5-ounce box of Sour Jacks will add another 300 calories to the tally, while an 8-ounce Reese’s Pieces pack will add another 1,160 calories and another 35g of saturated fat. 

Final Thoughts

Going all out at the cinema won’t kill you if it’s every once in a while as a super special treat. I’m not going to rob you of the expierence, don’t worry.

However with that being said, from this article, you can probably see that it’s not something you should be doing on the regular. 

Snackin on some candy, soda, and buttery popcorn at the movie theatre can skyrocket you past your recommended calories for the entire day, and you can be eating multiple days’ worth of saturated fat. 

This may not be such a bad thing, I mean it definitely is but you may have been able to overlook it a little more if it wasn’t for the fact that this is all completely empty calories.

This means that this won’t be all you’re eating for the day since it’s literally just snacks. 

You’ll have probably already eaten breakfast and lunch, and you’ll probably be likely to eat dinner later on in the evening, so the amount of calories you’re going to consume throughout the day is going to be absolutely astronomical. 

My advice would be for regular visits to just share a small unbuttered popcorn with a friend. When the three chains mentioned above were asked by CSPI, they all stated that if you requested a batch of salt-free popcorn they’d make it.

So this is always an option too, and an added plus…fresh popcorn. Remember, you don’t have to deny yourself every time you go out for a treat, but your health is super important.

Everything in moderation is okay, maybe instead of going all out for the full shebang, you could pick one option to cut down those calories.

This tier is a substantial upgrade on both the Insider and Premiere memberships. Members can see up to three movies every week at any Dolby Cinema, IMAX, RealD 3D, Prime or 2D theater for free. 

Other benefits of the A-List membership include: 

• Reservations through AMC’s website or its mobile apps are completely free
• You can hold up to three online reservations simultaneously
• Benefits reset every Friday morning, which is great timing, as a lot of movies premiere on Fridays
• You can form something called an ‘A-List Entourage’ which allows fellow A-Listers to make reservations on each other’s behalf. 

If you’re an A-Lister, you can use your free passes whenever and however you want.  You could view three movies consecutively, or spread the passes through the week, or whatever suits you. There’s no limitations.

However, there are a few limitations of the A-List membership, these include:

• If you cannot make your movie reservation for any reason, it’ll still count against your weekly allotment of free passes. You won’t get any credit or refund on unused passes 
• You won’t receive any points on free passes, since you’re not actually spending any money on them

Who Owns The Theater

This one should be obvious if you are able to rent out an AMC theater it will cost you more than a small independent theater.

The more simple the theater is, the less you will have to pay to rent, but in turn you will be downgrading the size and entertainment on offer in the bigger more commercialized theaters run by big companies. 

It is not just big theaters that will cost more, however, if you plan to rent a theater that has been a mainstay for a very long time and has huge historical significance then you will also be paying a larger fee than a newer theater.

If you do want to rent a theater from a big name such as Alamo or Cinemark then there are rules that must be followed that are set by the companies when it comes to renting one of their theaters.

Well we will take a look at the guest capacity for three big cinema companies. AMC, Alamo and Cinemark.

• Cinemark – You will be allowed to take upwards of 20 people to the theater you have rented.

• Alamo – Alamo is an outlier as the capacity will vary depending on the location so make sure to check beforehand. You will be allowed upwards of 30 people at certain theaters and only 10 guests at some others.

• AMC – Much like Cinemark you will only be allowed upwards of 20 guests at any AMC theater you would choose.

The Cost

We have already discussed that theaters owned by companies will typically be more expensive than a smaller owned theater.

But let’s look into the specific prices that each venue will offer, so that if you only have these options available you will be aware of how much you will be paying roughly.

Cinemark

The price to rent a Cinemark theater out will range from $99 up to $149.

You may be wondering why the price ranges so much and well that is due to the location as we previously discussed, the showtime and also the movie you are choosing to see as a group.

AMC

Again the price will range with AMC mostly depending on the film you are seeing. Older films will cost $99 and the newer blockbusters will cost you between $149 to $349.

Alamo

Finally we have Alamo, unlike the other two the price will not change regardless of what you are planning to watch. The price will be set at $163. You will need to pay a food and drink purchase that totals $150 but tickets are not included.
